In 1986 after seventeen years as a professional sailor operating charter, cruising and racing yachts, I founded Newport Marine Surveyors.

I survey motor and sailing yachts and have extensive experience working with composite construction techniques, hand laid up fiberglass construction, the SCRIMP system of resin infusion, vacuum bagging and carbon laminate construction. Boats that I survey and appraise may be state of the art composite, welded aluminum or steel. I use audio gauge equipment when surveying metal and carbon fiber.  My clients range from owners of world-renowned yachts needing consultations about a refit, a repair or a new construction to first time buyers contemplating a family cruising boat.

I have consulted with leading designers at Sparkman and Stephens, Ted Hood Company, Herreshoff, Perini Navi, Fife and Alden. I have contacts and good working relationships in boatyards around the world.

As a member of the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors, the American Boat and Yacht Council, and the National Fire Prevention Association, I survey to the standards of those organizations as well as USCG regulations.  Major insurers including ACE-INA, Travelers, AIG, Lloyds Syndicates and Progressive rely on the integrity, detail and quality of my work, often involving high profile claims and losses. I regularly attend IBEX, SAMS, and Underwriters Laboratories seminars and trade shows.

I understand the market trends of recreational yachts for pre-purchase survey valuations and for donations, also I am aware of the building costs of cruising and racing yachts. I understand the impact on the value when racing yachts are highly successful, or become obsolete due to racing rule changes.

I have worked in the United Kingdom, Turkey, Croatia, Greece, Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean and Bahama Islands and most seaboard areas of the US.
